Privacy Issue Roundup in 2020

The year 2020 was a “year like no other” to everyone. Regarding data protection and data privacy issues, I’ve created the report, ‘The 5 moments that hit Data Privacy in 2020’.

5. Released new regulation for Cookies

The regulation of cookies and following technology was at the center of discussion. GDPR prohibits cookie walls and clarifies that get clear valid consent. Cookies are subject to opt-in under GDPR and a sale under CCPA. from users.

4. Death of the EU-US Privacy Shield

On 16 July 2020, the EU Court of Justice(ECJ) ruled that the protection provided by the EU-US privacy shield is invalid and US law can’t ensure the protection of personal data of those in the European Economic Area(EEA). Prior to this decision, the EU-US privacy shield is commonly used for US companies to lawfully collect, transfer and save personal information in EAA. The ruling was largely based on the finding that the US government doesn't limit the surveillance of foreigners and US law lacks appropriate remedies for those in the EEA.

3. Apple’s new privacy-focused features in iOS14

As a privacy measure, Apple requires developers to request permission from users to track their activity and access their data. From a Pro-privacy perspective, Apple desires that “Users should know when their data is being collected and shared across other applications and websites - and they should have the choice to allow that or not. From iOS14, iOS apps have to ask permission to a user to use a camera and microphone and while using this application, a user should see an indicator on the top of a screen. Giving access to partial photos can be found.

2. Stringent data privacy legislation all around the world

The CCPA entered into effect on 1 January 2020 and marked the start of a new era in privacy legislation in both the California state and the US broadly. Not only the US but also South Korea and Japan all introduced new laws or amendments that are set to reform and bring their privacy regime into line with the latest international trends. Even the concept of “Immunity Passport” has been released recently to identify a person who is immune.

1. COVID-19

Except for COVID-19, I can’t describe all significant changes in 2020. Some data protection authorities briefly close their doors, and some continue to reduce operation while the pandemic is lasting. Some of COVID 19 patient information has been released to notify contractors if they get infected or not. Also, contact tracing is done to find potential patients. At the same time, the range of the new challenges, new risks of remote working has been shown to threaten companies.
