The plan for rolling out new Electronic ID Card in Taiwan is halted

Last year, the Taiwan's electronic ID card(eID) officially announced accord to the Ministry of the Interior(MOI). The new card will roll out in July 2021.

The eID was designed to combine the function of current ID card with Citizen Digital Certificates, allowing holder to access government service online. National health insurance card and driving license information would be included. But the first version will be available only the cardholder's name, birth date, material status and ID number.

But a plan to launch electronic identification cards has been suspended until a specific law has been established as a legal basis to govern the matter.

The Executive Yuan made the decision during a weekly Cabinet meeting in which MOI officials issued a report on the controversial matter that has been met with strong opposition in society due to grave public concern over the possibility of personal information leaks.

For this reason, MOI officials suggested that the digital ID card plan be halted temporarily until after a specific law has been passed based upon which the authorities can lawfully handle the issue in order to fully protect the privacy of the country's citizens.
